A few things to keep in mind with younger students: (1) they have short attention spans, (2) they don't understand big words, (3) they don't understand complex concepts. But that's not to say you shouldn't have high expectations for them. Be patient, and if it seems like the kids just aren't getting it, hang in there. Improvement is fast with some kids, slow with others. As far as lessons go, you have to teach them things like the notational system of course.
