Hi a,

I actually find my long experience as a student helpful when I teach. If I ever run into a problem with a student, I can (a) remember what my teacher did to correct that problem when I ran into it, or (b) phone an old teacher and ask for their suggestions if I had never run into that problem while I was a student. Also keep in mind that all great teachers were once students themselves.

A few things to keep in mind with younger students: (1) they have short attention spans, (2) they don't understand big words, (3) they don't understand complex concepts. But that's not to say you shouldn't have high expectations for them. Be patient, and if it seems like the kids just aren't getting it, hang in there. Improvement is fast with some kids, slow with others.

As far as lessons go, you have to teach them things like the notational system of course. Start easy with scales and simple exercises (I find that it works best when I create the exercises myself), and v. simple pieces.

Best of luck with your teaching! Feel free to ask me any questions you might have in the future.

Hi, I'm currently in university for Bachelor of Music and I've been wanting to teach but am nervous to get started. It is so true that as an experienced pianist, it's hard to put ourselves in the shoes of the teacher since we've spent so much time as a student. Anyway, I've been asked to teach a couple of young kids and was wondering what's the best way to get started?

Thanks,

- a

The original melody of the ringtone was lifted from a waltz named Gran Vals written by a 19th century Spanish composer named Francisco Tárrega. This version of the Nokia ringtone is not Tárrega's original.
